PREMIER SITE WASTE MANAGEMENT PLANS

A site Waste Management Plan (SWMP) is a document that identifies how waste and recycling will be managed on your construction site.

Why you need one

  • It’s the law: You might legally have to have a SWMP – see who needs a SWMP below.

  • Reduced waste: It helps to reduce the amount of waste produced and thrown away during construction.

  • More recycling: It increases the use of recycled building material with all the linked environmental benefits.

  • Save money: By using reducing waste, reusing material and recycling material you are cutting disposal costs, reducing your spend on material by recycling what you have on site, making sure you do

  • Legal issues: by choosing Premier to help draw up the SWMP you are making sure you get the right advice and your waste and recycling plans are carried out by licenced and experienced waste and recycling contractors. If illegally disposed of waste can be traced back to your site you will be fined.

  • Save you time: Any questions about waste and recycling on the site from Environment Agency, local councils or other interested parties can be answered quickly and easily by refereeing to the SWMP.

  • Benchmarking: the SWMP and the performance figures it measures provides you with a benchmark of your environmental performance to assess future projects.

The SWMP focus largely on on-site operations and identifies:

  1. Who is responsible for resource management.
  2. The types of waste that will be generated.
  3. Options for these wastes: what will be reduced, recycled or reused.
  4. Who will be responsible for waste management and recycling.
  5. A plan for monitoring and reporting on resource use, quantity of waste and
    quantity of recycling.

Key benefits of a SWMP

  • Provides structure approach to management and recycling on site
  • Reduces cost of waste management
  • Increase profit margins
  • Better control of regulatory risks relating to materials and wastes on site
  • Compliance of contractual needs of public and private sector needs
  • Help you to deal with any queries from environmental regulatory

Who needs a SWMP

Construction projects costing £300,000 or more need a Site Waste Management Plan (SWMP) in place. If your project costs between £300,000 and £500,000 you need a Standard SWMP. If your project costs over £500,000 you need a Detailed SWMP.

But there are benefits of having a SWMP in place for any building project, it shows that you take your environmental responsibility seriously, avoids any shoddy waste practices by sub-contractors, helps keep you within the law.
