PREMIER'S BICYCLE recycling SCHEME

bicycles, bike parts and bike accessories for charity.

Premier Waste Management has teamed up with a charity, Recyke y’ Bike in Newcastle, CycleRoute (also in Newcastle) and  Sports Recycler, a social enterprise in South Shields, that specialise in bringing unwanted bikes back to life.

We are helping these two bike reuse schemes get as many bikes, bike parts and accessories into their workshops.

What are we collecting?

Any and every type of bicycle is being collected – from mountain bikes to kid’s three wheelers we can use them all.
We are also collecting broken bikes, bike parts and accessories.

What happens to the bikes, parts and accessories

The bikes are repaired back into working order and bikes parts are used to make new bikes. Once restored the bikes are sold on here in the North East at an affordable price, donated to local families, used in activities for the good of the community, or donated to a scheme which ships bikes out to West and South Africa.

The African scheme provides vital support to health projects, providing doctors, nurses and midwives with bikes to reach otherwise inaccessible villages in some of the poorest countries in the World. The same scheme donates children’s bikes to Afghanistan.

A bicycle represents a big investment in resources, man power and energy. It makes sense to get as much use out of it as possible. So do not throw that bike away – even if it is broken. By giving it to these two bike reuse schemes your bike can go on being enjoyed and having a useful life.
Your bike might even end up being used by a nurse in Africa.

frequently asked questions

WHAT KINDS OF BIKES ARE BEING DONATED?
Any and all kinds.
The schemes need any and every kind of bike, no matter what make or type or size they can make use of it.

WHAT DO YOU DO WITH THE BROKEN BIKES AND PARTS?
The mechanics at the scheme can make use of any bike parts and accessories to rebuild a damaged bike or even build one from scratch. So even if all you have is a wheel, a frame or a pedal please bring that in.
Tyres and inner tubes, saddles, bike accessories, lights, bike chains – they are all useful.

DO THE BIKES HAVE TO BE WORKING?
No they do not.
It would be great to get working bikes but the two schemes can fix up broken bikes for reuse. Even bikes that are damaged can be stripped for parts.

WHERE DO I TAKE THE BIKES AND BIKE BITS?
See the addresses given above.

WHAT HAPPENS TO THE PARTS THAT ARE TOO DAMAGED?
The emphasis of the scheme is making use of the bikes and parts we collect, even a broken wheel can yield some spokes. Any metal left over or that cannot be used will be sold as scrap. Metal is infinitely recyclable and this scrap will go onto make new metal and could even find itself being made into a brand new bike.

CAN I BUY A REFURBISHED BIKE?
Yes.
Both schemes offer recycled bikes for sale. See the listing above and their website for details of the selling days.

WHAT ABOUT LEARNING HOW TO LOOK AFTER MY BIKE?
Both Sports Recycler and Recyke y' Bike offer classes in bike maintenance.
