By road
Directions from the South
We recommend if travelling from the south to leave the A1(M) at Junction 49 at Dishforth (near Thirsk) and head north towards Teesside. Continue past Teesside, past the exit for Hartlepool and towards Peterlee and Sunderland.
- Exit the A19 at Castle Eden on the A181/A1281, keep in the left hand lane on the slip road and join the A181 heading in a westerly direction towards Durham.
- After almost 1 mile exit the A181 on the slip road which takes you up onto a flyover, keep in the right hand lane.
- Turn right on the A1280 towards Shotton Colliery.
- After around 1 mile the road climbs out of the wooded dip and levels out, turn first right into a side road (signposted to the Household Waste Recycling Site) and the site entrance is the first right.
Directions from the North
Travelling south down the A19 go past both Peterlee exits:
- Exit the A19 at Castle Eden on the A181/A1281, keep in the right hand lane turn right over the flyover joining the A181 in a westerly direction towards Durham.
- Follow points 2, 3 and 4 as above.
By rail
The nearest main line station is Durham. Thornley is a 30 minute taxi ride away.
